Two 1933 R319 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth Color-Process Proof Cards
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,703
Offered are two unique color-process proofs of card #144 Babe Ruth. One proof is a blue-and-white color-process card of Ruth, with the type setting "George Herman (Babe) Ruth" along the top left. The second proof card is a near-complete color process, with a "Big League Chewing Gum" advertising strip along bottom and the copyright logo in the lower left, but missing all black type. As is always the case with color-process proof cards, each has a blank back. Collectors are used to seeing printer's proofs for relatively modern sets, but examples from classic vintage sets such as Goudey are virtually nonexistent. These cards were originally part of two complete 24-card Goudey color-process sheets discovered in the early 1980s, which at that time were professionally cut so that they could be displayed in pairs. Today these pairs rarely surface. The #144 Babe Ruth was one of the key highlights on the pair of proof sheets (the other two being #160 Lou Gehrig, which is also offered in this auction, and #149 Ruth). These are the only Goudey color-process cards of Babe Ruth (#144) known to exist. Both proof cards are in Near Mint condition. An extraordinary and unique pair of color-process cards, used by Goudey's printer for proofing during the production process of Goudey's classic 1933 series. Both encapsulated "Authentic" by SGC. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++.
