1888 N172 Old Judge Billy Sunday - PSA EX-MT 6 (Highest Graded!)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,659
Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Highest-graded example by PSA! Absolutely stunning card with Nr/Mt or better appearance. 1888 N172 Old Judge of legendary ballplayer-turned-evangelist Billy Sunday (#446-5, leaning-on-bat pose), center fielder, with the Pittsburgh Nationals. With a copyright date of 1888, the card was issued during Sunday's first season with Pittsburgh; up to that point, he had spent his entire Major League career as a backup outfielder with the powerhouse Chicago Nationals. It is interesting to note that Goodwin used a photograph of Sunday in his Chicago uniform, probably because a photo of him with Pittsburgh was not yet available, and airbrushed "Pittsburgh" on his uniform. This is a magnificent example from this landmark issue of one of the nineteenth century's best-known players. A very sharp-looking card in all respects, perfectly clean front and back (two minor spots on the reverse, of no consequence), with four sharp corners, no creases, and featuring Sunday posed in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. This is a great card! This N172 Billy Sunday was the highlight of a small but exciting find of six extremely high-grade nineteenth-century cards, all new to the hobby. The other five cards in the find, which include four 1888 S.F. Hess Boxers and one other N172 ballplayer, are offered as a single lot elsewhere in this auction. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+.
