1940 Play Ball Complete Set (240)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,851

Presented is a rarely offered and extremely consistent complete set of the classic 1940 Play Ball set issued by Gum, Inc. With all the Hall of Famers, current and past, and rare high-number series cards (#181 thru 240), the number of noteworthy cards in this set rivals the number of common cards. 1940 Play Ball has always been a difficult set, and the rarity of complete sets has been underappreciated. It is also a set that has become even rarer in complete form in recent years, in part due to its extraordinary break value, and the inclusion of several particularly valuable key cards (among them Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Joe Jackson, two of which are in Vg condition in this set). We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 DiMaggio (SGC FAIR 20), 6 Gomez (Ex), 7 Dickey (Ex), 10 Ruffing (Vg), 21 Ferrell (Pr), 27 Williams (SGC VG 40; popular second-year card), 30 Berg (Fr), 38 Doerr (Gd), 40 Greenberg (Ex-Mt), 41 Gehringer (Fr), 46 Averill (Gd), 87 Hubbell (Vg), 88 Ott (Gd), 102 Klein (Fr), 104 P. Waner (Ex), 105 L. Waner (Vg), 107 Vaughan (Vg), 118 Hoyt (Vg-Ex), 119 Alexander (Vg), 120 Johnson (Vg-Ex), 124 Combs (Vg), 129 Harris (Vg-Ex), 132 Mack (Vg-Ex), 133 Foxx (Vg), 134 Cronin (Vg-Ex), 141 Stengel (Vg), 142 Kelly (Ex), 153 McKechnie (Ex), 158 T. Jackson (Vg), 167 Frisch (Vg-Ex), 168 Wagner (Ex), 170 Speaker (Vg), 171 Heilmann (Vg), 172 Bender (Vg-Ex), 173 Lajoie (Gd), 174 Evers (Ex), 175 Mathewson (Vg-Ex), 176 Manush (Vg-Ex), 177 Baker (Vg-Ex), 178 Carey (Vg-Ex), 179 Sisler (Fr), 180 Cochrane (Vg), 223 Jennings (possible slight trim), 224 Traynor (Vg-Ex), 225 "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (SGC VG 40; the card displays honest light corner wear and a light surface crease on the lower right), 226 Hooper (Vg-Ex), 227 Haines (Vg-Ex), 230 Faber (Ex), 232 Goslin (Ex), 234 Chance (Ex), 235 McGraw (Vg-Ex), 236 Bottomley (Vg), 237 Keeler (Vg), and 238 Lazzeri (Ex). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 90% range from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex overall), and 10% range from Fr to Gd-Vg (with a few slightly lesser). Technically the set falls into the mid-grade category, but has an overall presentation of a much more expensive and higher-grade set. Vintage sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing perhaps the most outstanding and least volatile value in the world of vintage cards. This is rare opportunity to aquire an extremely attractive complete set of this all-time classic vintage gum-card issue, at a fraction of what a high-grade set would command. The equivalent SMR value for just the three SGC-graded cards (not including the 237 ungraded cards!) is $1,015. Also included are two duplicates. Total: 240 cards plus two duplicates. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,851
