1941 Play Ball Complete Set (72) Including 37 PSA-Graded Cards

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,555

Extremely attractive medium-grade complete set of the 1941 Play Ball series issued by Gum, Inc., one of card collecting's all-time classic gum issues. This full-color seventy-two-card set includes many Hall of Famers and stars, including Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. Of the seventy-two cards in the set, thirty-seven (51%) have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA (except two SGC). The PSA condition report is as follows: One NM-MT 8: #61 V. DiMaggio. Two NM 7: #51 and 62. Five EX-MT 6: #6 Hubbell, 24, 49, 60 Klein, and 67 (SGC EX/NM 80). Two EX+ 5.5: #64 Doerr and 70 Dickey. Eight EX 5: #1 Miller, 3, 9, 29, 31, 50, 57 (SGC EX 60), and 65. Five VG-EX+ 4.5: #20 Ruffing, 28, 36, 40, and 63 D. DiMaggio. Ten VG-EX 4: #8 Ott, 10 Vaughan (MC), 12, 13 Foxx, 15 Cronin, 18 Greenberg, 19 Gehringer, 21 Keller, 26, and 72 Gomez. One VG 3: #69. Three GOOD 2: #14 Williams (second year card), 54 Reese RC, and 56 Vander Meer. Four cards were rejected by PSA for evidence of trimming (#11, 27, 39 Henrich, and 71 Joe DiMaggio). The balance of the cards range from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex). Technically the set falls into the “very strong medium" grade category, but has an overall presentation of a technically much more expensive and higher-grade set. Early sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing the most solid and least volatile value in the world of vintage cards. The SMR value for thirty-six of the thirty-seven PSA-graded cards (not including the one qualified card, the four trimmed cards including J. DiMaggio, and the 31 ungraded cards) is $3,868. Total: 72 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $3,555
