1951 Bowman PSA-Graded Near-Complete Set (320 of 324 cards)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $8,295

1951 Bowman near-complete set of 320 different (out of 324 cards in set). This is an extremely impressive, exceptionally high grade, and very consistent complete near-set (320/324 cards) of this classic early 1950s Bowman issue. All 320 cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA (all have been personally submitted to PSA over the past couple years by our consignor, now 87 years old, who collected back in the 1970s). This is a beautiful set and one that has literally been safely stored away in a closet, protected from all elements, for decades by an old-time collector since long before the days of professional grading. Twenty-seven cards are graded NM-MT 8, two NM+ 7.5, ninety-one NM 7, seven EX-MT+ 6.5, ninety-six EX-MT 6, fifty-nine EX 5, twenty VG-EX 4, three VG 3, one GOOD 2, and fourteen Authentic. This near set is missing two key high-value cards (#253 Mantle and 305 Mays, both pulled from the set to be offered as separate lots in the auction) and two commons (#190 and 217) for completion. These cards haven't seen the light of day in over twenty-five years! In the "old days" collectors would have referred to a set of this quality as "Mint." Modern grading standards are certainly much different and harsher than in the 1970s and earlier, but whatever the technical grades, even at a glance it is obvious this is a special set. The PSA grades are as follows: Twenty-seven NM-MT 8: #73 (OC), 82, 84, 92 (OC), 93 (OC), 102, 133 (OC), 149, 156, 158, 160, 176, 191 (OC), 244, 254 Jensen RC (OC), 256 (OC), 259, 261, 264 (OC), 265 (OC), 266 (OC), 270 (OC), 272, 276, 279, 281 (MC), and 293 (OC). Two NM+ 7.5: #25 and 167. Ninety-one NM 7: #17, 20, 27, 29, 30 Feller, 32 Snider, 35, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 47, 49, 52, 54, 55, 56 Branca, 74, 75, 76, 77, 79, 80 Reese, 88, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 103, 104, 106, 107, 112, 116, 118 (OC), 128, 129 (OC), 130, 131, 145, 147, 153, 154, 159, 161, 162, 169, 170, 174, 177, 180, 195 (OC), 197, 202 (OC), 210, 211, 212 (OC), 213, 220, 221, 222, 223, 233 Durocher, 234, 240, 241, 242, 246, 247, 250, 251, 252, 255, 257 (OC), 260 (OC), 263, 267, 268 (OC), 269, 273, 274, 275 Harris (OC), 280, 282 Frisch (OC), 284, 285, and 292.
