1951 Topps "Blue Backs" Complete PSA-Graded Set (52)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,778

Complete high-grade 1951 Topps "Blue Backs" set, entirely graded and encapsulated by PSA (submitted by our consignor who collected back in the 1970s). The landmark "Blue Backs" set is extremely significant as this was one of the first major baseball card sets ever issued by Topps. This is a very sharp set! PSA Condition Report: Seven MINT 9: #5, 6 Schoendienst, 16, 18 (OC), 20 Branca, 21, and 24 (ST). Sixteen NM-MT 8: #2, 4, 9 Sain, 11, 12, 14, 17, 19, 27, 28 (ST), 30 Slaughter, 31 (ST), 36, 44, 47, and 49. Six NM 7: #15, 29, 40, 45 Pierce RC, 50 Mize, and 51. Four EX-MT 6: #25, 34, 35, and 46. Sixteen EX 5: #1 Yost, 3 Ashburn, 7, 10 Page, 13, 22, 23, 26, 32, 33, 37 Doerr, 41, 42, 43, 48 and 52. Two VG-EX+ 4.5: #38 and 39 Lopat. One VG-EX 4: #8. The three lesser-graded cards each have a bright, crisp Near Mint to Nr/Mt-Mt appearance but have been technically graded very harshly by PSA due to very tiny surface factory wrinkles visible on the reverses that are natural to the set and related to production. This set represents Topps' first major effort in the baseball-card business. The 1951 "Blue Backs" Topps set is among the most significant, yet overlooked, of all early Topps cards, and in our opinion represents an extraordinary value. The SMR value for forty-five of the graded cards (not including the four qualified cards and the three cards graded less than EX 5) is $2,770. Total: 52 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
