1955 Topps Double Headers Complete Set (66)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,778
Presented is a very attractive mid- to high-grade complete set of the sixty-six cards from the 1955 Topps Double Headers series. Double Headers are one of the scarcest and most unusual of all early 1950s gum issues. The design of the set was inspired by the T201 Double Folder set issued by Mecca Tobacco in 1911. When issued in packs, the cards were perforated horizontally, allowing for easy folding, so that each card could picture two ballplayers sharing the same legs. It is interesting to note that while Topps’ standard issue of 1955 was smaller in number than many other years at just 206 subjects, each of the 112 players in the Double Headers issue (two players per card) also appears in the standard set. It is also interesting to note that the backgrounds of the cards, when placed side-by-side, form a continuous stadium background image. Double Headers were not aggressively promoted and were sold in very limited numbers. In addition, most of those that did make it into the hands of youngsters were damaged as they were folded and unfolded countless times, as intended. Many of the cards in the offered set have escaped most of that heavy handling and are bright, crisp, and incredibly fresh across the board. Twelve cards from this complete set are graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #3/4 Irvin (Vg), 21/22 Skowron (Vg-Ex), 25/26 J. Robinson (NM 7), 31/32 Banks (EX 5), 45/46 Kaline (VG-EX+ 4.5), 53/54 Herman (Vg), 69/70 T. Williams (EX 5 oc), 105/106 Aaron (EX 5), 109/110 Newhouser (20/80 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 111/112 Killebrew (EX-MT 6 mc), 121/122 Kluszewski (EX 5), 127/128 Spahn (Vg), 129/130 Gilliam (20/80 L/R and 80/20 T/B, otherwise Ex), 131/132 (last card in set; Vg). Five additional PSA-graded cards: #43/44 (VG-EX 4), 51/52 (EX 5), 67/68 (EX 5), 75/76 (NM 7), and 93/94 (EX-MT+ 6.5). The balance of the cards in the set grade 55% Vg-Ex to Ex, 45% Vg (with a few slightly lesser). This is a very attractive, crisp, and overall fairly high-grade complete set of this unusual and often overlooked early 1950s Topps series. The SMR value for just eight of the twelve graded cards (not including the two cards graded less than EX 5, the two qualified cards, and forty-seven ungraded cards) is $934. Total: 66 cards representing 132 players. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,778
