1958 Topps "First Series" Uncut Sheet with Williams and Complete Set of "Yellow Letter" Variations
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,259
1958 Topps production uncut sheet of 77 cards presents an extraordinary concentration of key cards to the set: #1 Ted Williams, 5 Willie Mays, 30 Hank Aaron (yellow-letter variation), and 52 Roberto Clemente (yellow-letter variation), and a complete set of all thirty-three "Yellow Letter" variation cards (which feature the player or team name printed in yellow, as opposed to the white, on select cards which are numbered between 2 and 108). These "Yellow Letter" variations have always been a challenge for serious Topps completists. All cards on this sheet are from the first series (#1-110). This is a final production sheet with fully printed backs. Additional Hall of Famers include Duke Snider, Al Kaline (yellow letter variation), Don Drysdale, Early Wynn (yellow-letter variation), and Bob Lemon (yellow-letter variation). This 77-card sheet is technically defined as a partial sheet, as 1958 Topps were printed in 132-card production sheets. Five eleven-card rows at the bottom have long ago been neatly cut away, but the sheet certainly has the presence of a full-sheet display. This extremely attractive partial uncut sheet presents a very rare (possibly unique) and relatively affordable alternative to a complete 132-card 1958 Topps sheet (if one exists and were available). This is the first 1958 Topps Yellow Letters "First Series" sheet we have ever seen. Technically in modest grade due to various faults, including some creases, a few tears, and surface abrasions, but despite its obvious condition problems the sheet displays beautifully. The sheet measures 22.5 x 26 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,259
