1963 Salada-Junket Coins Complete Set (63)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,896
Complete high-grade set of 1963 Salada-Junket Coins. The 1963 set was a welcome change for collectors, as Salada limited its output to 63 coins, calling it the "All-Star" series. This time the coins were produced in metal, a style that Topps would imitate in the production of its inserts the following year. The coins had a bright, light blue border for the American League players (32), and a bright red border for the players of the National League (31). The back design included the players' names, the number of the coin in the series, a few players' stats from the previous season, and the Salada and Junket logos. Some of the coins reuse the painted photos from the previous year, but the vast majority use great new color photos. These coins are difficult to find in high grade, as the paint chips off the rims of the coins quite easily. Also, there is often scratching on the coins' faces, due to manufacturing problems with some of the dies. Eight key coins are graded by PSA: #4 Koufax (MINT 9), 17 Banks (NM-MT 8), 22 Mays (NM-MT 8), 23 Clemente (NM-MT 8), 24 Aaron (MINT 9), 56 Mantle (NM-MT 8), 57 Maris (NM 7), and 62 Berra (NM-MT 8). Forty-nine of the remaining coins are pristine, grading Nr/Mt-Mt with flawless edges and sharp centering and color registration. Six have minor flaws. Total: 63 coins. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,896
