1909-1911 T206 White Border Near-Complete PSA-Graded Set (509 of 524)

Starting Bid - $25,000, Sold For - $77,025

The 509 cards in this collection represent 97% of a complete T206 set. This T206 near-set is highlighted by seventy-three Hall of Famers, including three Ty Cobb cards, three Christy Mathewsons, two Walter Johnsons, three Cy Youngs, as well as many rarities (including Elberfeld – portrait, Wash. and Smith - Chi. & Bos.) and 47 of the 48 scarce Southern League series cards. The missing fifteen cards include the "Big 4," Chase/pink, Cobb/green, Demmitt/St. Louis, O'Hara/St. Louis, and one Southern League series card (Coles). There is little need for a formal introduction to the T206 White Borders set, the single most important and highly collected issue among all tobacco and all vintage cards. This is an extremely attractive and clean near-complete set of 509 cards. The cards span all grades and include many significant condition highlights; the entire set has tremendous eye-appeal across the board and even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. This is a very carefully assembled set put together by a very dedicated collector over a period of many years. Few cards have creases, and most cards have been downgraded solely due to normal corner and edge wear. It would be a challenge in any era to assemble such an attractive T206 set, and all the more challenging to find a set of this extraordinary quality already assembled and available for sale as a unit today. Any T206 set, of course, naturally has a tremendous "break value" and most quality sets are broken up and sold individually. This is a very clean, exceptionally attractive, and carefully assembled collection, representing a strong foundation for the complete assembly of a magnificent fully graded set. Most of the cards have Piedmont or Sweet Caporal backs, but also included are Hindu, Cycle, Sovereign, Polar Bear, and Old Mill. The entire set is graded and encapsulated by PSA. The set is comprised of two EX-MT+ 6.5, seventy EX-MT 6, twenty-two EX+ 5.5, 177 EX 5, fifty-five VG-EX+ 4.5, 120 VG-EX 4 (two are qualified), seventeen VG+ 3.5, twenty-nine VG 3 (one is qualified), four GOOD+ 2.5, seven GOOD 2, one FR 1.5, three PR 1, and two Authentic.

For convenience, we are providing here the grades of all seventy-three Hall of Famers and additional key cards: PSA grading composite: 2 cards are graded EX-MT+ 6.5: Dineen and Fiene (port.). 70 cards are graded EX-MT 6: including Chance (yellow), J. Collins (Minn.), Doyle (NY, hands above head), Huggins (hands at mouth), Huggins (port.), Joss (hands at chest), Keeler (bat), Mathewson (dark cap), McGraw (finger in air), McGraw (cap), Wallace, and three Southern Leaguers. 22 cards are graded EX+ 5.5: including Chesbro, G. Davis (Chicago), Jennings (port.), Willis (bat), and four Southern Leaguers. 177 cards are graded EX 5: including Bender (trees), Bresnahan (bat), Chase (trophy), Chase (blue), Collins (Phila.), Duffy, Elberfeld (Wash., port.), Evers (port.), Jennings (one hand), Kelley, Lajoie (port.), Lajoie (throwing), Lajoie (bat), Marquard (follow thru), Marquard (port.), McGraw (glove), Smith (Chi. & Bos.), Speaker, Waddell (throwing), Walsh, Wheat, Young (bare hand), Young (port., Sovereign 350 forest green), and eleven Southern Leaguers (including Shaughnessy). 55 cards are graded VG-EX+ 4.5: including Brown (port.), Chase (dark cap), Crawford (throwing), Gandil (Black Sox), Jennings (both hands), Joss (port.), Kleinow (Bos., Polar Bear), Waddell (port.), and two Southern Leaguers. 120 cards are graded VG-EX 4: including Baker, Beckley, Bresnahan (port.), Brown (Cubs), Chance (red), Cicotte (Black Sox), Clarke (bat), Clarke (port.), Cobb (red), Cobb (bat off, Sovereign 350 apple green), Cobb (bat on), Crawford (bat), Griffith (bat), Griffith (port.), Keeler (port.), Marquard (hands at thighs), Mathewson (port.), McGraw (no cap), Tinker (bat off), Tinker (bat on), Tinker (hands on knees), Tinker (port.), Willis (port.), Willis (throw), Young (glove), and seventeen Southern Leaguers. 17 cards are graded VG+ 3.5: including Bender (no trees), Bender (port.), Brown (Chicago), Chance (batting), Flick, Johnson (port.), and three Southern Leaguers. 29 cards are graded VG 3: including Chase (white cap), Evers (Chicago), McGinnity, and three Southern Leaguers. 4 cards are graded GOOD+ 2.5: including Lundgren (Chicago) and one Southern Leaguer. 7 cards are graded GOOD 2: including Brown (Wash.), Dahlen (Bklyn), Evers (Cubs), Johnson (hands at chest), and one Southern Leaguer. 1 card is graded FR 1.5: Stahl (glove). 3 cards are graded PR 1: Burch (bat, brown Hindu), J. Hart (southern leaguer), and Mathewson (white cap). Two cards are Authentic: Anderson and McCauley (southern leaguer). This is a set with tremendous eye-appeal, appearing at a glance considerably stronger than suggested by the very respectable and accurate condition composite and individual grades listed above. T206s in PSA NM 7, PSA NM-MT 8, or higher grades have risen to astounding levels that are unaffordable for most collectors. Impressive cards ranging in grade from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt condition, of which this near-set is primarily comprised, represent one of the most outstanding values in all vintage-card collecting. This is a beautiful near-complete set of T206 White Borders, the most popular and classic set of the era, in an extremely desirable overall grade. The SMR value for this collection (not including the three cards that are qualified and the two Authentic cards) is $89,613. Total: 509 cards. Reserve $25,000. Estimate $50,000++. SOLD FOR $77,025
