1909-1928 Cuban Baseball-Card Collection (80 cards)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,703
Outstanding collection of eighty Cuban baseball cards from the 1920s (except two from 1909), representing eight rare and significant Cuban card issues, highlighted by such players as Armando Marsans and Adolfo Luque, and including several major Negro League stars who appear in very few sets. This collection was assembled by legendary card-collecting pioneer Joe Pelaez, who though he was primarily an extremely advanced collector of U.S. tobacco cards, was very proud of his Cuban heritage and so was motivated by this to assemble over the years a small high-quality representative collection of rare Cuban cards. 1) 1909 Cabañas (2 cards): Garcia (Vg) and O'Laughlin (umpire, Pr). 2) 1923-1924 Billiken Cigarettes (9 cards): Abreu (Pr), Acostica (Pr), Crespo (Pr), Cueto (Gd-Vg), Fernandez (Pr), Morin (Pr), Portuondo (Pr), Quintana (Fr), and Rojo (Fr). 3) 1923-1924 Nacionales (15 cards): #11 double-player pose (Vg), 15 Forinozo (Gd), 24 O.
