1954 Duke Snider Signed Brooklyn Dodgers Contract
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $10,665
Four-page fold-over contract, dated January 11, 1954, between Duke Snider and the Brooklyn National Baseball Club, Inc., signed in black ink by "Edwin D. Snider" (grading "10") and "E. J. Bavasi" ("10") as vice president. The one-year contract, for the 1954 season, calls for Snider to receive a salary of $31,000. Snider enjoyed perhaps his greatest all-around season in 1954, batting a career-high .341 with 40 home runs and 130 RBI. Although Snider was oftentimes overshadowed by Mantle and Mays, his record during the 1950s cannot be denied. Snider hit forty or more home runs for five consecutive years beginning in 1953 and his total of 326 home runs was the most by any player in the decade. He finished his career with 407 home runs, 1,333 RBI and a .295 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980. 104 of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is the first Snider contract we have ever offered and we can recall having seen only one other at public auction. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays very light toning along the edges and is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $10,665
