Circa 1930 New York Giants & Pittsburgh Pirates Team-Signed Ball with Mel Ott
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $474
Official American League (Barnard) ball signed in black fountain pen by approximately thirty players who appear, primarily, to be members of the circa 1930 New York Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates. (The faintness of some of the signatures, combined with the fact numerous signatures overlap, makes it difficult to accurately count them.) The Giants are more fully represented here, including Mel Ott, Travis Jackson, Freddie Lindstrom, Billy Terry, Chuck Fullis, Jim Chaplin, Hughie Critz, Bob O'Farrell, Walter Roettger, Bill Walker, Harry Rosenberg, and Freddie Fitzsimmons. The six Pirates signatures we can identify belong to Adam Comorosky, Larry French, Rollie Helmsley, George Grantham, Glenn Spencer, and Jewel Ens (Mgr.). Apparently, this ball was later signed by additional players, as evidenced by the signatures of Yankee players Red Rolfe and Steve Sundra, both of whom made their major league debuts after 1930. Signatures range from "1" to "7," averaging "4/5." The ball is moderately soiled and displays a number of small abrasions. The manufacturer's stampings, which date the ball to the three-year span 1929 to 1931, are light, but legible. In Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+.
