Nineteenth-Century Baseball and Non-Baseball Tobacco-Card Collection (43)

Original-owner collection of forty-three baseball (4) and non-baseball (39) nineteenth-century cards, highlighted by Hall of Famers Charles Comiskey and John Ward, from four different classic nineteenth-century tobacco-card issues. These cards were saved by our consignor's grandfather and have remained in the family since the year of issue. The balance of the collection (which includes sixty-one N172 Old Judge baseball cards) are presented in several lots elsewhere in this auction. 1) 1887 N174 Old Judge Boxer: Rare nineteenth-century boxing tobacco card featuring legendary Hall of Famer Jack McAuliffe in a boxing stance. These N174 boxers are very similar to the N172 Old Judge baseball series. Fr-Gd condition. 2) 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions (26 different of 50 in the set): Acton (wrestler), Albert (pedestrian), Beach (oarsman), Bogardus (marksman), Buffalo Bill ("Wild West Hunter"), Dempsey (pugilist), Duncan (broadswordsman), Dwight (tennis), Fitzgerald (pedestrian), Garrison (jockey), Gaudaur (oarsmen), Hanlan (oarsman), Mitchell (pugilist), Muldoon (wrestler), Murphy (jockey), Myers (runner), Rowe (bicyclist), Rowell (pedestrian), Schaefer (billiards), Sears (tennis), Slosson (billiards), Stevens (bicyclist), Taylor (tennis). C. Wood (jockey), Wood (bicyclist), and Zukertort (chess). Sixteen cards grade Gd and ten are Pr-Fr. 3) 1888 N28 Allen & Ginter Champions (14 cards): Bauer (wrestler), Bogardus (rifle shooter), Caruthers (baseball), Carver (rifle shooter), Comiskey (HOF, baseball), Frey (pool), Gaudaur (oarsmen), Glasscock (baseball), McKay (oarsmen), Mitchell (pugilist), Oakley (rifle shooter), Schaefer (billiards), Sullivan (pugilist, trimmed), and Ward (HOF, baseball). Most of the cards grade Pr (includes a couple slightly better). 4) 1889 N29 Allen & Ginter Champions (2 cards): Lange (pedestrian, Fr) and Murphy (pugilist, trimmed). Total: 43 cards. Reserve $300.
