1940 Walter Johnson Signed Check
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,896
Bank check, dated December 10, 1940, signed by the legendary “Big Train,” Walter Johnson. The check, drawn on The Germantown Bank of Germantown, Maryland, is made out to “Strayer College” in the amount of $24.40 and is signed “Walter Johnson” in blue fountain pen (grading “9”). It wasn’t until the past ten years that the Johnson family finally released Walter Johnson checks. Prior to that, Walter Johnson checks were virtually nonexistent in the collecting world. In total, approximately 300 checks survived and have been sold by the Johnson family. While that number may sound like a lot, it is actually a very modest number compared with the quantities of Ruth and Cobb checks that have been absorbed by the collecting world. The offered check (6.25 x 2.75 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps (none touching upon the signature), and a small bank spindle hole in the center (which is a very common characteristic of a canceled bank check). The spindle hole is very unobtrusive and the check is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Mounted (by means of photo corners and framed together with a recent print of Johnson to total dimensions of 13.25 x 19 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,896
