1934 "Tour of Japan" Team-Signed Ball with Ruth and Gehrig
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,252
In 1934 Connie Mack led a group of Major League players on a highly publicized postseason goodwill Tour of Japan. That much-celebrated tour is especially noteworthy as it was the only overseas tour in which both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig participated. Offered is here is an "Official American Ball" (produced by the Japanese company Tamazawa) signed in black fountain pen by nineteen members of that celebrated 1934 tour, including Babe Ruth (sweet spot; "3"), Lou Gehrig ("3/4"), Jimmie Foxx (only last name visible; "2"), Frank Hayes ("2"), Charlie Gehringer ("4"), Lefty O'Doul ("4"), Eric McNair ("4"), Rabbit Warstler (green ink; "6"), Earl Averill ("1"), Earl Whitehill ("2/3"), Moe Berg ("2"), Bing Miller ("1"), and Doc Ebbing ("1"). Only vestiges of the other six signatures remain, leaving them impossible to identify. The ball is moderately soiled, but all of the manufacturer's stampings remain legible. In Very Good condition. This is an admittedly low-grade 1934 Tour of Japan ball, but, fortunately, the Ruth and Gehrig signatures are two of the strongest on the ball and it still serves as a fine representative example, and, due to the modest condition, a particularly desirable relatively affordable one. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,252
