1960 Ted Williams Signed Letter to Hillerich & Bradsby

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $830

One page typed letter, dated November 3, 1960, signed by Ted Williams. In this letter, addressed to "John Hillerick" [sic] of "Hillerick [sic] & Bradsby," Williams makes a formal request. In full: "Gentleman: I hereby authorize and request you to deliver to Mr. Joseph C. Nelson, Attorney at Law, 925 So. Homan Ave., Chicago 7, Illinois, a copy of any and all documents which I may have signed at any time authorizing the use of my name on, or in connection with, 'Louisville Slugger' baseball bats, or in connection with any other product. Sincerely yours, (Ted) Theodore S. Williams [signed]." Williams' signature has been scripted in black ink and grades "8/9." This letter dates just one month after Williams retired from baseball. Since Williams was no longer receiving an annual salary, he and his attorneys were obviously looking to capitalize on his name and likeness for endorsements and promotional purposes. To that end, it was important for them to know exactly what rights had been previously granted to other companies; hence this letter. His attorneys were also probably checking to make sure that Williams was receiving all due royalties owed him from any previous agreements. Williams, who signed a contract with H&B on April 21, 1937, while playing in the Pacific Coast League, had a long relationship with the company and used its bats exclusively during his career. Just that fact alone probably helped sell more Louisville Slugger bats to the youth of America than any high-priced advertising campaign. Not only is this an interesting Williams letter with excellent baseball content, the fact that it features his rare full-name signature makes it especially desirable. The letter (6.5 x 6.75 inches) displays two horizontal folds and the word "file" is written in blue ink in the upper right corner. In apparent Excellent to Mint condition. Matted and framed together with a recent print of Williams to total dimensions of 20 x 14 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $830
