1961 Rogers Hornsby Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,036
Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue ink (grading "8/9") on a side panel by Rogers Hornsby. Although this ball dates from the 1946-1959 manufacturing period, it was signed by the legendary "Rajah" a few years later, as noted by Hornsby's inclusion of the year, "1961," below his signature. Hornsby was in between coaching assignments at the time this ball was signed. He had been an assistant with the Chicago Cubs in 1958 and 1959, but the worst was yet to come. In 1962 Hornsby joined Casey Stengel's coaching staff on the New York Mets, the worst team in baseball history. That season obviously took its toll on the fiery Hornsby and he passed away on January 5, 1963, at the age of sixty-six. The ball displays a few areas of light scattered toning and the manufacturer's stampings are light, but legible. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $5,036
