1978 Nestor Chylak Single-Signed Ball - Extreme Modern Rarity
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,067
Official 1978 World Series ball inscribed on a side panel by Nestor Chylak. The Hall of Fame umpire has inscribed the ball in blue ink (grading “9”), “To Bruce – Best wishes to a great sport – Nestor Chylak Jr. – American League.” This is only the third Nestor Chylak single-signed ball we have ever offered. Nestor Chylak single-signed baseballs are extremely rare and represent one of the modern day virtually impossible-to-obtain “keys” to any complete or world-class single-signed Hall of Fame ball collection. Chylak was an American League umpire from 1954 through 1978 and umpired in five World Series during his career (1957, 1960, 1966, 1971, and 1977). Unfortunately, he passed in 1982 at the age of fifty-nine and he wasn’t elected to the Hall of Fame until 1999. Few collectors had occasion to ask for his autograph. His signature today, in any form, is very rare and highly prized by Hall of Fame autograph collectors. His signature on a baseball, let alone a single-signed one, is one of the great modern rarities in all of collecting. The ball is in Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,067
