Outstanding 1890s Baltimore Orioles Program Collection, Including Jennings and Hanlon Portrait Covers (3)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,740

Collection of three Baltimore Orioles regular-season programs dating from late 1890s, including two from the club’s 1896 World Championship season. This is a small but remarkable newly discovered find of 1890s Baltimore programs. Each of these programs is an extraordinary rarity. 1) 1896 Baltimore Program with Jennings on Cover. One of a series of programs issued in Baltimore in 1896 featuring portraits of Orioles players. The four-page program (6 x 9 inches) features a portrait image of Hughie Jennings on the cover and was issued for a game against the New York Giants. The interior preprinted lineups include Kelley, Keeler, and Jennings for Baltimore, and Beckley, Van Haltren, and Tiernan for New York. Neatly scored in pencil to record a 10-4 Baltimore win. Research indicates that the only 10-4 Baltimore home victory over New York in 1896 occurred on August 5th. Vg, with a number of light creases throughout, a small area of surface paper loss on the front cover, and a tiny edge tear along the left border that affects both covers and all of the pages. 2) 1896 Baltimore Program with Hanlon on Cover. One of a series of programs issued in Baltimore in 1896 featuring portraits of Orioles players. The four-page program (6 x 9 inches) features a portrait image of manager Ned Hanlon on the cover and was issued for a game against the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. The preprinted lineups include Keeler, Jennings, Kelley, and Robinson for Baltimore, and Griffin, McCarthy, Anderson, and LaChance for Brooklyn. Neatly scored in pencil to record an 8-6 Brooklyn victory. Research indicates that the only 8-6 home loss to Brooklyn in 1896 occurred on April 17th, which was the second game of the season for Baltimore. Vg, with a horizontal fold, partial separation of both covers along the spine, and a few light creases. 3) 1898 Baltimore Program with Temple Cup on Cover. The extremely colorful cover to this four-page program (6.5 x 9.5 inches) pictures the "Champion Base Ball Club of the United States" pennant at the top, makes note of the club’s three consecutive pennants between the years 1894 and 1896, and its two consecutive Temple Cup victories in 1896 and 1897. The beautiful design includes an image of The Temple Cup is pictured in the center. Issued for a game against the eventual National League champion Boston Beaneaters, the preprinted lineups include McGraw, Keeler, Jennings, Kelley, and Robinson for Baltimore, and Hamilton, Tenney, Long, Duffy, Collins, Stahl, and Nichols for Boston. Neatly scored in pencil to record a 3-2 Baltimore win. Research indicates that the only 3-2 Baltimore home victory over Boston in 1898 occurred on April 23rd. Vg, with two horizontal folds, partial separation of both covers along the spine, and light creases. While we have seen and even offered several other programs over the years from the 1896 Baltimore program series featuring player portraits, we have never before even seen the Jennings or Hanlon programs (both obviously of special note as key Hall of Famers) or ever seen an example of the magnificently designed and colorful 1898 Baltimore program. This is a very special group of rare programs, each extremely noteworthy in its own right, and each a potential worthy highlight in any nineteenth-cenury program or Baltimore collection. Total: 3 programs. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,740
