1887 Washington Nationals Scorecard Collection, Including Bid McPhee Cover (9)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,963

This collection of nine nineteenth-century baseball scorecards, each recording a game played by the Washington Nationals in 1887, is distinguished by the many different illustrated covers represented here, including two with player portraits: Hall of Famer Bid McPhee and “Long Charley” Jones, the first player to hit two home runs in the same inning. Five of the scorecards record National League games, while the other four feature exhibition games against minor-league clubs. Six of the scorecards were produced by John B. Sage and feature colorful illustrations of generic players on the cover combined with a comical catch phrase. It should be noted that this group of scorecards is new to the hobby and was only just recently discovered by our consignor, a noncollector, tucked away inside a book that was part of a large group of items purchased together at a local sale. Given their outstanding condition, it would not be surprising to learn that these programs were housed in that book for most of the past 125 years. Each of the six John B. Sage scorecards displays a small water stain along the top border (barely noticeable from the front); otherwise all are in Excellent to Mint condition unless otherwise noted. Sizes range from 3.5 x 6 inches to 4.75 x 7.5 inches and all are simple fold-over scorecards. Each has been neatly scored in pencil. The collection is comprised of the following: 1) Scorecard from an exhibition game against Portland of the New England League (8-4 Washington victory). The cover, produced by the Strobridge Lithograph Company, features a portrait image of “Long Charley” Jones, who was a member of Cincinnati of the American Association at the time. The preprinted lineups lists Connie Mack, Farrell, and Krieg for Washington, and Thayer, Hatfield, Bell, and Lufberry for Portland. 2) Scorecard from an exhibition game against the Buffalo Bisons of the International Association (7-4 Washington victory). The cover, produced by the Strobridge Lithograph Company, features a portrait image of Hall of Fame second baseman Bid McPhee. The preprinted lineups feature Connie Mack, Farrell, and Krieg for Washington, and Grant, Lehane Hamburg, and Zell for Buffalo. There is a partial split along the spine; otherwise Ex-Mt. 3) Scorecard from a National League game against the New York Giants (5-4 Giants victory). The preprinted lineups feature Connie Mack, Farrell, and Krieg for Washington, and Ewing, Ward, Connor, O’Rourke, and Welch for New York. Research indicates that this game took place on May 2nd. 4) Scorecard from a National League game against the Boston Beaneaters (6-4 Boston victory). The preprinted lineups feature Gilligan, Farrell, and Krieg for Washington, and Kelly, Nash, Morrill, and Wise for Boston. Research indicates that this game took place on October 6th. 5) Scorecard from a National League game against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys (9-8 Pittsburgh victory). The preprinted lineups feature Dealy, Farrell, and Hines for Washington, and Dalrymple, Carroll, and Coleman for Pittsburgh. Research indicates that this game took place on May 27th. 6) Scorecard from a National League game against the Chicago White Stockings (14-5 Washington victory).
