1886 N370 Lone Jack Cigarettes SGC-Graded Complete Set (13)
Sold For:
$60,000
Year: 1886
Auction: 2021 Summer
Lot #: 15
Auction: Pre-1900 Baseball Cards (1830-1899)
Presented is an extraordinary complete set of all thirteen extremely rare N370 Lone Jack Cigarettes, including Hall of Famer Commy Comiskey and St. Louis Browns owner Chris Von Der Ahe. The Lone Jack set, issued by the Lone Jack Cigarette Company of Lynchburg, Virginia, features portraits of the 1886 Brownie Champs. The thirteen-card set actually uses the very same portraits as appear in the N172 Old Judge Brown's Champions series, but with larger images cropped more closely, and with advertising for Lone Jack Cigarettes surrounding the players' portraits in the background. Their unusual design and great rarity distinguish them as one of the most interesting of all nineteenth-century baseball issues. Lone Jacks bear some similarity to Old Judges, but have no direct connection to Goodwin, and may have been regionally issued only in Virginia. While we have handled individual examples over the years, we have never seen a complete (or near-complete) set of Lone Jack cards offered at auction. To put the rarity of these cards into proper prospective, one should realize that we have sold only 12 different examples of these cards in the last 20 years. This is an unprecedented offering and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a complete collection of this ultra-rare card issue. This set was one of the great highlights of the collection of Paul Pollard, one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors (who passed away in 2009). It has always been one of the most prized of the extraordinary and rare sets in his collection and is being offered by his family. Each card is graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). SGC Grading Composite: EX 5 (2 cards): Bushong and Latham. VG/EX 4 (2 cards): Nicol and Welsh. VG+ 3.5 (2 cards): Foutz and Hudson. VG 3 (4 cards): Caruthers, Comiskey, O'Neil, and Robinson. GD 2 (2 cards): Kimler and Von Der Ahe. Authentic (1 card): Gleason. This is an extremely impressive complete set of 1887 N370 Lone Jack Cigarettes! Every card in this complete set presents with outstanding photo contrast. This tremendous collection represents an incredible opportunity to acquire a complete set of one of baseball card collecting's most elusive and desirable sets. Total: 13 cards. Opening Bid $10,000.
