1935 R321 Goudey Uncut Panel Including Ruth

  • Sold For: $6,900
  • Year: 1935
  • Auction: 2004 Spring
  • Lot #: 343
  • Auction Category: Prewar Baseball - 1930s and 1940s Cards

Uncut panel (7 x 5.75 inches) of six cards includes the key card to the set featuring Babe Ruth. This was Ruth's last card as a player, and while the image is a close-up detail from his 1933 Goudey card #181 dugout pose, because the set was issued in 1935 he is identified on this card as a member of the Boston Braves. Ruth appeared in just 28 games with the Braves in 1935 before retiring as a player. 1935 Goudey is one of the company's most interesting efforts. Each card features four players. Among the 24 players featured on this six-card uncut sheet are eleven Hall of Famers. In addition to Babe Ruth, they include Burleigh Grimes, Chuck Klein, Kiki Cuyler, Paul Waner, Waite Hoyt, Lloyd Waner, Jim Bottomley, Bill Terry, Rabbit Maranville, and Travis Jackson. The reverse of the 1935 Goudeys feature puzzle pieces, which can be collected and assembled to form a large baseball picture. One of the most intriguing aspects of an uncut panel of 1935 Goudeys, in addition to the novelty of its great rarity, is that when turned over one can view the reverse puzzle already assembled, as it appeared before being cut. The reverse of this six-card panel features Frankie Frisch in a batting pose. Like all Goudeys, R321s were originally printed on 24-card sheets. The puzzle backs long ago encouraged collectors to hand-cut the sheets according to the puzzle backs. We have yet to see a full 24-card sheet that has escaped this fate, though perhaps examples exist which have yet to surface. Extremely rare in uncut panel form. Bright and clean, with perfect focus and colors. Near Mint condition. Reserve $800. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $6,900.00
