Addendum: The printed catalog description (which appears below) indicates that four different variations of the Sanella Margerine Ruth card are included in this lot. This lot actually contains three different variations and one duplicate. The "Type 1" variety and the "Type 4" variety (as noted on the PSA labels) are the same. It appears that there are only three different variations of this card in total (as opposed to four as previously thought and checklisted). Thanks to Don Fluckinger, editor of The Standard Catalog , for bringing this to our attention! Collection of all four different Babe Ruth back variations from the 1932 Sanella Margarine series, each graded and encapsulated by PSA. Issued in Germany, this beautiful full-color issue of 112 different subjects measures 2-3/4 x 4-1/8 inches and also includes all types of athletes (boxing, football, tennis, wrestling, track, etc.). The text on the reverse is printed in German. All four cards feature the same image of Ruth hitting a homer on the front, but each card represents one of the four different back printing variations of the set: 1) Type 1 (EX 5). The advertisement for Sanella is centered on the reverse. 2) Type 2 (NM 7). The Sanella advertisement on the back is located towards bottom border. 3) Type 3 (EX 5). The Sanella advertisement on the back is located towards bottom border and also the card number ("83") has been added. 4) Type 4 (EX 5). The Sanella advertisement on the reverse is located in the center of the card and also the card #83 has been added. These are very attractive high-grade examples. For the Ruth collector not interested in paying a king's ransom for Ruth cards from the popular 1933 Goudey series, but still wants original 1930-era vintage cards of Babe Ruth, the 1932 Sanella Margerine series presents an exceptional opportunity and represents an extraordinary value. A find of these cards years ago has kept the price down, but like any find of vintage cards, they will eventually not be as readily available. (American dealers found they were available from card dealers overseas and bought them all to sell to American collectors.) When these cards were first available in America, they sold for a small fortune before collectors realized there was only a small quantity. Four choice examples of the "Bambino," one of each style, from one of the most unusual sets of the era. Total 4 cards. Reserve $100. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $587.50
