1933 R136 National Chicle "Sky Birds" Original Wax Box with 92 Unopened Packs

  • Sold For: $47,000
  • Year: 1933
  • Auction: 2009 spring
  • Lot #: 1527
  • Auction Category: 1930s Unopened Gum Box and Pack Find

Presented is a 1933 R136 National Chicle "Sky Birds" display box with ninety-two original unopened one-cent wax packs. This box is one of the most extraordinary highlights from a newly discovered find of rare unopened 1930s nonsport cards offered in this auction. This box originally held 100 one-cent wax packs. The "Sky Birds" set features famous pilots and airplanes of the day, and has always been regarded as one of the most popular of all 1930s nonsport gum-card sets, in part because of its bright colors, sharp details, art deco designs, and popular subject matter. Unopened material for card sets from the 1930s is exceedingly rare. These extraordinary high-grade unopened wax packs are in virtually perfect condition, looking exactly as they did when they were sent from National Chicle to the gum and candy distributor in 1933. They have remained untouched in the original display box since 1933, and even has the pencil notation "Rec 1933" written on the lid. The display box has imperfections (missing pieces and side panels split on the corners) but still has tremendous display value. It is unprecedented to find complete or near-complete boxes of any National Chicle products in original unopened form. Also included is an additional single pack from this box that has long-ago been opened (original gum, wrapper, and one card #3). Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $47,000
