1912 T207 Brown Background Irving Lewis No Emblem - PSA EX-MT 6

  • Sold For: $17,625
  • Year: 1912
  • Auction: 2010 Spring
  • Lot #: 411
  • Auction Category: Prewar Baseball - T Tobacco Cards

Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Highest-graded example! Presented is the highest-graded example of the rare Irving Lewis (no emblem on sleeve variation) card, one of the legendary rarities of tobacco-card collecting and one of the significant key rarities of the T207 Brown Background set. It is fascinating that there are two distinct varieties of Lewis, which is an extraordinary rarity in the T207 set in either form. In our experience, it appears that the "no emblem on sleeve" variety is the rarer of the two, and the PSA population report confirms this (five versus twelve). Today collectors recognize many cards as being of various degrees of rarity in the T207 set, but the rare Irving Lewis card (either variety) will always be recognized as one of the key rarities from the classic T207 set. Many advanced collectors consider Lewis even rarer than the famous Lowdermilk rarity. The card is bright and clean, both front and back, with light, even corner wear, and is centered to the top left (approximately 30/70 L/R and 40/60 T/B). Broadleaf Cigarettes advertisement on reverse. This is an extremely attractive high-grade example of this legendary T207 rarity. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $17,625
