1950s Don Larsen Signed Spalding Glove Display and Box

  • Sold For: $415
  • Year: 1956
  • Auction: 2012 spring

  • Auction Category: Post-1900 Baseball Memorabilia

While Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series insured that his name would be forever immortalized in the annals of baseball history, the feat also earned him more tangible rewards: endorsement fees. Evidence of his newfound fame is presented here in the form of this exceedingly rare Spalding retail display piece. Constructed of three die-cut cardboard segments, the green-and-black display features a double-sided top panel that is lettered "Spalding/Sets the Pace in Baseball" on each side. Hanging from the panel on a string are double-sided die-cut representations of a Spalding baseball and a Don Larsen model glove (identical images on each side). Larsen has inscribed the hanging glove portion of the piece in black marker (grading "10"): "Don Larsen/WS PG 10-8-56." The display, which measures approximately 19 x 12 x 27 inches, has two precut holes in the base that obviously once held another cardboard piece and the top panel has two precut notches on either end to allow for additional strings to be hung. With the exception of only modest handling wear, the display remains in Near Mint condition. Accompanying it is a vintage Spalding retail box that once housed a Don Larsen "No. 1175 Glove." The front of the box features a portrait image of Larsen, while the other three panels picture generic illustrations of ballplayers. Signed by Larsen in blue Sharpie ("10") to the right of his portrait. The box (8.5 x 5 x 7.5 inches) is missing one of its side flaps and displays minor staining, tears, and creases. In Very Good condition. Included with the box is the original store receipt for the glove, dated 7/20/59, which shows a total cost of $7.33. This is the first example of this extremely rare Spalding retail display that we have ever seen and it seems safe to assume that few (if any) others have survived. Total: 2 items: display and glove box. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $415
