High-grade collection of thirty-nine pins (37 different) from the 1932 PR2 Orbit Gum pin set, each graded by PSA. PSA condition report: Two MINT 9: #9 and 38. Twenty-one NM-MT 8: #5, 6 Cuyler, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 21, 22, 30, 32 English (without bat), 33 (bat), 34, 35, 55, 67, 96, 99, 103, and 120 Gomez. Eleven NM 7: #3, 4, 12 Averill, 14 Dean, 20, 26 Grimes, 27, 31 O'Doul (Giants), 32 (bat), 37, and 72. Five EX-MT 6: #7, 58 Lombardi, 72 (unnumbered), 92, and 111 Combs. Also included are four scarce unnumbered variations (Alexander, Andrews, Johnson, and Vosmik), for a total of 43 pins. This pin set was issued by Orbit Gum in circa 1932 and is catalogued in the American Card Catalog as "PR2." This is one of the few quality pin sets of the era, and also one of the few pin sets to be issued by a gum-card manufacturer. This set, of course, is closely related to the 1933 R305 Tattoo Orbit set, one of gum-card collecting's premier 1930s issues, and was issued at the same time. Each pin measures 13/16 inch in diameter and features a player portrait lithograph set against a green background. The player’s name and team is printed on a yellow strip beneath the portrait image. Each pin is numbered at the very bottom. The surface of these pins chip and wear very easily, as they are "lithos": the colorful images are printed directly on the metal pins as opposed to being printed on paper and then covered with celluloid. This is an outstanding high-grade group, far better than usually found for this condition-sensitive issue, that could serve as the foundation for one of the finest sets ever assembled or provide upgrades to virtually any Tattoo Orbit Gum pin collection. This issue is not yet on the radar of most 1930s gum-card collectors, but would be a worthy accompaniment to any 1930s gum-card collection. The total SMR value for the group is $5,470. Total: 43 pins (39 PSA-graded and four ungraded). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,015
