70% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex), and 30% lesser. Almost all of the cards have an irregular cut, but otherwise all are bright and crisp with strong colors. Near-complete set of W514 strip cards, consisting of 100 of the 120 cards in the set. The twenty cards missing for completion are #82 Cicotte, 83, 86, 88, 89, 91 Weaver, 92, 94 W. Johnson, 95 Crawford, 98, 99, 102 Speaker, 104, 105 Risberg, 109, 110 Wheat, 111, 112, 113 Stengel, and 114 Chase. This is an original-owner collection of W514s personally saved as a youngster by the father of our consignor! The W514 set is the largest and most widely collected of the various "strip card" issues of the era. This near-complete set of 100 W514 strip cards includes an incredible twenty-two Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Christy Mathewson, plus four of the eight Chicago "Black Sox," who were banned from baseball for their alleged role in throwing the 1919 World Series. The set is highlighted by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, his only strip-card appearance. Keys: #2 Babe Ruth (Fr), 3 Felsch (Fr), 15 Joe Jackson (irregular cut along the right, otherwise Ex-Mt), 16 Southworth (Ex-Mt), 21a Maranville - Braves (Vg-Ex), 22 Carey (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 25 Collins (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 31 Gandil (irregular cut along the right, otherwise Ex), 34 Huggins (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 35 L. Williams (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 40a Bancroft - Quakers (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 41 Griffith (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 43 Ty Cobb (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 52 McGraw (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 56 Hornsby (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 60 Schalk (Vg), 62 Lajoie (Vg-Ex), 64 Hooper (irregular cut along the left, otherwise Ex), 65 Alexander (irregular cut along the right, otherwise Ex), 69 Faber (irregular cut, otherwise Vg-Ex), 72 Mathewson (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 75 Baker (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 79 Rice (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 85 Roush (irregular cut, otherwise Vg-Ex), 101 Sisler (irregular cut, otherwise Vg-Ex), and 106a Jennings - Tigers (upper left corner missing, otherwise Vg). Strip cards, of course, are by definition hand-cut, as intended, and are therefore often encapsulated by the third-party grading companies as "authentic" even if they have an Excellent or better appearance, due to the cuts affecting a small portion of the cutting guidelines. REA grades strip cards slightly differently than the grading companies. The grades we have provided above do not downgrade the cards for insignificant cutting flaws which are natural to strip cards. This classic 1920s issue represents one of the most outstanding values in vintage-card collecting and is one of the most important and comprehensive sets of the era. Total: 100 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,963
