1911 T3 Turkey Red #9 Ty Cobb

  • Sold For: $1,896
  • Year: 1911
  • Auction: 2012 spring
  • Lot #: 297
  • Auction Category: Prewar Baseball Cards (1900-1941)

Graded POOR 10 by SGC. Very attractive low-grade T3 of Ty Cobb, the key card of the 1911 Turkey Red Tobacco cabinet-card series. Turkey Reds are considered by many to be the most beautiful and well-made tobacco set ever issued. Cobb is not just the most valuable card in the set, it also one of the most well known and popular of all Ty Cobb cards. This example is bright and crisp, both front and back, with bold colors, well centered, and no major creases affecting the image area (a couple light surface creases in the borders). There are two small pinholes at the top and one small pinhole at the bottom, as is often the case with T3s. Technically in POOR condition, this is a card which, aside from the pinholes, displays as Vg-Ex and provides collectors a rare, relatively affordable alternative to a far more expensive high-grade example without compromising on all of the most important display-value qualities of the card. This is a very impressive-looking, technically low-grade example of one of card collecting's most classic cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,896
