Rarely offered near-complete (51 of 60) set of 1928 F50 Yuengling's Ice Cream cards, including an incredible thirty Hall of Famers highlighted by Ty Cobb and Lou Gehrig. Missing just nine cards for completion (#6 Ruth, 12, 15, 25 H. Wilson, 35, 39, 41 Harris, 48, and 58). Yuengling's Ice Cream cards are one of the few issues of the late 1920s and are very rarely seen in near-set form. All fifty-one cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC (except one PSA). This is an extraordinary near-set which has been assembled by an extremely dedicated collector. Three cards grade Nr/Mt-Mt, four Nr/Mt, one Ex+, six Ex, fourteen Vg-Ex, fifteen Vg, five Good, and three Fair. Important note: Even the lowest-graded examples in this set are sharp-looking cards which have been very harshly graded due to minor faults. The SGC grades are as follows: Three NM/MT 88: #5 Hartnett, 13 Hornsby, and 28 Speaker. Four NM 84: #9, 10 Sewell, 24, and 50 Frisch. One EX+ 70: #8 Pennock. Six EX 60: #3, 4 Faber, 33, 37, 38, and 54 Sisler. Fourteen VG/EX 50: #1 Grimes, 7, 14 Traynor (PSA VG-EX 4), 19 Bancroft, 26 Gehrig, 27 Cobb, 29 Lazzeri, 30 Hoyt, 43, 49 Goslin, 53 Roush, 55, 59 L. Waner, and 60 (last card in set). Fifteen VG 40: #2, 16 Rixey, 17, 20 Kelly, 21 Combs, 22 Heilmann, 23 Schalk, 32 Carey, 42 McGraw, 44 Alexander, 46 Terry, 47, 51, 56, and 57 Coveleski. Five GOOD 30: #11, 31, 34, 36 Rice, and 40. Three FAIR 20: #18, 45 P. Waner, and 52. The Yuengling's Ice Cream set is identical in design to several other contemporary sets (Harrington's, Tharp’s, Sweetman, etc.), but with advertising for Yuengling's Ice Cream on the reverse. The modest production quality of most cards in this era (being black-and-white as opposed to the color bubble-gum cards issued in the 1930s) have kept these 1920s classics relatively affordable. Their rarity, the inclusion of so many Hall of Famers, the fact that there are so few quality issues dating from the 1920s, and the excellent value they represent have earned them a growing appreciation among advanced collectors in recent years. Yuengling's is one of the most substantial sets of the late 1920s. This is an extraordinary medium- to high-grade near-complete set of these distinctive and rare 1920s cards. Total: 51 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $5,036
