Spectacular full-color 1933 Goudey "Sport Kings" Chewing Gum advertising poster. The 1933 Goudey "Sport Kings" advertising poster is one of the most stunning and desirable of all Goudey card-related advertising pieces. The poster (14-1/8 x 11-1/2 inches) advertises the classic 1933 Goudey "Sport Kings" bubble-gum card set, the most popular and widely collected multisport bubble-gum card set ever issued. With an appearance very similar to that of an uncut sheet, it was designed to be displayed in candy store windows to encourage youngsters to collect the set. The poster pictures twenty-four cards (#1-24), which represent exactly half of the forty-eight cards in the set. This is the only poster issued by Goudey to advertise the "Sport Kings" set. (There is no similar poster featuring cards #25-48.) Included on the poster are many of the most important key cards in the set including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Red Grange, Jack Dempsey, and Jim Thorpe. A red banner across the top reads: "Stars and Champs of Today and Yesterday," and a similar banner along the bottom announces that a free picture card is included with each pack of Sport Kings Chewing Gum. This advertising poster made sure that kids understood that these new and exciting cards were out. The twenty-four cards are featured in glorious full-color to make sure that the poster was eye-catching and that nothing was lost in the translation. This poster was a call to action! It has never been used, and still has the original light strips of clear glue along the top and bottom which are part of the poster's design and which allowed it to be affixed directly to a candy-store window. The colors are almost impossibly bright and strong, with no fading whatsoever, appearing exactly as they did in 1933. Decades ago, legendary collector/dealer/auctioneer Lew Lipset (author of The Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards ) discovered a very small group of these posters (approximately ten). Most of the few surviving "Sport Kings" posters in the collecting world today come from this very small find, including this example which was purchased by our consignor directly from Lew Lipset some twenty-five years ago! Most of the known examples of this poster have undergone extensive restoration to make them presentable. This is a very strong example in terms of condition and display value. The poster has benefited from very minor professional restoration in the lettering strips (where the adhesive stuck to another example from the find due to being stored one on top of another). The poster is linen-backed, which makes a couple of fold-line creases virtually impossible to see unless looking for them. The poster displays an Excellent to Mint overall appearance. This is an outstanding example of one of 1930s gum-card collecting's most highly prized advertising displays. Beautifully framed to dimensions of 17 x 18 inches. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open).
