Collection of eighty-nine different 1952 Star-Cal decals (sixty Type 1 and twenty-nine Type 2), highlighted by thirty-three Hall of Famers including Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Roy Campanella, etc. This extremely advanced Star-Cal collection has been consigned by the family of one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who assembled these decades ago in the early days of organized collecting. Issued by the Meyercord Co. of Chicago in 1952, the Type 1 Star-Cal set consists of seventy different major leaguers each pictured on a large decal (4-1/8 x 6-1/8 inches) with a facsimile autograph below his image. The Type 2 set is similar in design to the Type 1 but slightly smaller (4-1/8 x 3-1/16 inches), and consists of thirty-two decals, with each sheet featuring two players instead of one. Seventy-six of the eighty-nine decals are in their original packaging envelopes as issued. 1) Type 1 near-complete set (60 of 70): Missing just ten decals for completion (#70G Mantle, 71C Williams, 72A Kell, 72C, 72D, 72F, 73B, 73G Fox, 80C, 81E Musial). Keys: #70C Berra (not in original envelope), 70F Rizzuto, 71B Williams, 74E Feller, 77A Ashburn, 78E Mays, 79A Hodges, 79B Reese, 79C Campanella (not in original envelope, "167" neatly written in ink on reverse), 79E Snider, 79G Robinson, 81F Musial. 2) Type 2 complete set minus 3 (29 of 32): Missing just three decals for completion (#86B, 87D, and 89A). Keys: #84B Berra/Lopat (not in original envelope), 84C Rizzuto/Coleman, 85A Williams (not in original envelope), 86A Kell/Newhouser, 87C Pierce/Fox, 88A Lemon/Hegan, 88B Doby/Feller, 89C Ashburn, 89D Kiner, 90A Mays/Irvin (not in original envelope), 91A Hodges/Reese, 91B Campanella/Robinson, 91C Snider/Roe (not in original envelope), 93A Musial, 93B Schoendienst/Slaughter. Star-Cal Decals are naturally difficult to grade. This is especially so when they are in their original condition-sensitive red-bordered envelopes (as is the case with 76 of the 89 examples included in this lot) as the Star-Cal Decal can be in Excellent or better condition, but the flush-to-the-border red wrapper framing the decal almost always shows wear and if graded along with the near-perfect decal naturally creates the issue of whether it is the decal or the generic window wrapper that is actually being graded. The Star-Cal Decals in this collection are overall in Excellent condition (with a few slightly lesser due to light surface wear), and the wrappers show typical modest edge and corner wear (ranging from Vg to Ex). As can easily be seen, Star-Cal Decals are an extremely attractive and colorful issue that includes a particularly high concentration of Hall of Famers. This is an outstanding collection and is the largest and closest-to-complete collection of Star-Cal Decals we have ever offered. Total: 89 Star-Cal Decals. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
