Graded VG 40 by SGC. Extremely rare example of card #10 Roberto Clemente from the 1962 Venezuelan Topps set. The Topps Venezuelan issues are among the most fascinating sets of the 1960s. The first 198 cards of Topps’ 1962 baseball set (#1-198) were reprinted on a darker cardboard stock for sale exclusively in the Venezuelan market. The fronts are identical in design to the regular-issue Topps’ cards. The backs, however, are printed in Spanish (with the exception of the League Leaders cards #51-60). The 1962 set is the first Topps Venezuelan issue. This card has slightly rounded corners and is perfectly centered. This card is far from Mint condition, but is far above average for this unusual issue. They are almost always found with light paper loss and scrapbook remnants on the reverse, since these cards were intended to be glued into an album produced for that purpose. This very attractive example is a rare exception to this rule; the back is clean and intact with only one tiny spot of paper loss on the bottom. Though they receive little attention because they are virtually never found in high grade, Topps Venezuelan cards are among the most unusual and rare baseball-card sets of the decade. This is a virtually unheard of high-grade Venezuelan example of one of the most popular players in the history of the game. We could not think of a better player to have for a sample card from the Venezuelan Topps' series than Hall of Famer and Puerto Rican hero Roberto Clemente. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
