Offered is a massive collection of sixteen complete sets (or near-complete) of Kellogg's (11 sets) and Rold Gold (5 sets) baseball cards, spanning the years 1970 to 1975, plus an additional 609 cards, for a total of 1,426 cards. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, the Kellogg's cereal company was the only true competition for Topps in the baseball-card market. These sets include cards of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Ernie Banks, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Reggie Jackson, and Pete Rose. All the other stars of the day are also included. Forty-nine cards are graded by PSA. 1) Six 1970 Kellogg's Complete Sets (75 cards each for a total of 450 cards): All six complete sets grade Nr/Mt or better (with a few slightly lesser). The 1970 set was the first simulated 3-D cards issued by Kellogg's. This unique design concept, which lasted for fourteen years, was achieved by placing a clear color player photo between a purposely blurred stadium background scene and a layer of plastic overlay. Thirty PSA-graded cards: MINT 9 (15 cards): #2 Rose, 7 Seaver (4), 12 Mays (3), 27 Clemente (2), 32 Jackson (4), and 40 Banks. NM-MT 8 (14 cards): #2 Rose (3), 7 Seaver, 12 Mats (2), 27 Clemente (3), 32 Jackson, and 40 Banks (4). EX 5: #2 Rose. 2) 1971 Kellogg's Complete Set (75 cards): Grades Nr/Mt or better overall (seven cards have surface imperfections). The 1971 Kellogg's set is of special note with reference to rarity as this was the only year in which complete sets could not be ordered directly from the company. The only way to collect 1971 Kellogg's was to buy box after box of cereal, with just one card packaged in each box. Completing a set took a Herculean effort. 3) 1972 Kellogg's Complete Set (54 cards): Grades Nr/Mt-Mt overall. 4) 1973 Kellogg's Complete Set (54 cards plus an additional 600 cards): 70% grades Nr/Mt or better, 30% lesser. The 600 additional cards consist of the following three players: #6 Rose (200), 16 Ryan (200), and 22 Jackson (200). 5) 1974 Kellogg's Complete Set (54 cards): Grades Ex-Mt overall with heavy curling (seven cards have surface imperfections). 6) 1975 Kellogg's Complete Set (57 cards): Grades Nr/Mt-Mt overall (four cards have surface imperfections). 7) Five 1970 Rold Gold Complete and Near-Complete Sets (73 cards plus nine extra cards for a total of 82 cards): Two of the five sets are missing one card #4 Cochrane for completion. All five sets grade Nr/Mt-Mt overall (with a few slightly lesser). This set was produced to honor the "Greatest Players Ever" in the first 100 years of baseball as chosen by the Baseball Writers of America in 1969. Cards of Babe Ruth (two different poses), Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and ten other Hall of Famers comprise the set. The only way to assemble a 1970 Rold Gold set was to buy countless bags of pretzels, which included only one card per bag. The set was re-released by Kellogg's in 1972, but Rold Gold cards can be differentiated from the Kellogg's cards of 1972 by the 1970 copyright date on the reverse. Nineteen PSA-graded cards (all mislabeled by PSA as 1972 Kellogg's): MINT 9 (9 cards): #13 Gehrig (4) and 15 Cobb (5). NM-MT 8 (10 cards): #6 Ruth (5), 13 Gehrig, and 14 Ruth (4). Due to the age of new vintage-card collectors, and the relative affordability of 1970s cards compared with earlier issued sets, it is not surprising that interest in cards from the 1970s has increased in recent years (and will probably continue to increase). This is a very substantial investment or dealer lot with a tremendous potential break value. Total: 1,426 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,148
