  • Sold For: $2,015
  • Year: 1888
  • Auction: 2012 spring
  • Lot #: 77
  • Auction Category: Pre-1900 Baseball Cards (1830-1899)

1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Thomas Burns (#59-4 pose), third baseman of the Chicago Nationals in a batting pose in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. All N173 Old Judge cabinets are naturally rare, but this is a particularly noteworthy example in that it has an extremely rare black mount. The cabinet has just a little minor edge and corner wear, and therefore technically grades GOOD, but as can be seen, it is a very attractive example of this significant and rare N173 mount variety. The reverse has a line of writing along the top (barely noticeable because it blends into the black back but is mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). This is an extremely pleasing and rare N173 black-mount example, and an ideal sample of this significant nineteenth-century rarity. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,015
