1921 White's Bakery (Tip Top) Baltimore Orioles Collection (6)

  • Sold For: $4,740
  • Year: 1921
  • Auction: 2013 spring
  • Lot #: 381
  • Auction Category: Prewar Baseball Cards (1900-1941)

Collection of six cards from the 1921 White's Bakery set. These extremely rare cards were issued exclusively in the Baltimore area with loaves of Tip Top Bread produced by White's Bakery. The set features players from the pennant-winning Orioles team of the International League (including the first card of Hall of Famer Lefty Grove, though Grove is not included in this find). This is a particularly clean and attractive group for this fragile set. These cards measure 3-1/4" by 5-1/2" and are printed on very thin stock, making them easily susceptible to damage. The collection consists of the following: James Aitcheson (Gd/Vg), Rufus Clarke (Fr), Merwin Jacobson (Fr), Fritz Maisel (Fr), Jimmy Murphy (Gd), and Jack Ogden (Vg). Five of the six cards have a completely clean central image (only Clarke has a horizontal crease) and are downgraded due to technical issues such as minor wrinkling or a small pinhole. An exceptional opportunity to acquire six of the nineteen different cards currently known to exist from this rare Baltimore regional issue. Total: 6 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
