Addendum: It has been brought to our attention that this card, as well as the other La Azora Cobb, are each actually one-half of a 1912 Detroit Tigers schedule, which has been neatly detached in the center (perhaps as intended). Thank you to Leon Luckey of Net54Baseball.com for providing us with this information, and a scan of the intact schedule, available for viewing here .
Graded GOOD 30 by SGC (submitted by REA). Exceptionally rare and newly discovered example of Ty Cobb (fielding pose) from the 1912 La Azora Cigars series. Issued by a Detroit-area cigar company, this "set" (it is comprised of only two cards) depicts Ty Cobb in two ideal poses, fielding and running, with the reverse featuring the Detroit Tigers' home and away schedules, respectively, for the 1912 season. The sepia-toned images are on postcard-size stock with the schedule boldly printed in brown ink on a white reverse. Interestingly, this card (and the La Azora Cigars running pose of Cobb, which is presented as a separate lot in this auction) was purchased by our consignor as part of an original-owner 1910-era collection, the balance of which were Detroit Tigers Dietsche postcards. This is one of Ty Cobb's rarest cards, having only been cataloged in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards within the past decade. Only five examples, of either pose, have ever been graded by SGC or PSA (three fielding and two running). This is the highest-graded example of the fielding pose with only one other at this level. The offered card presents as Vg-Ex with even wear to the four corners, light areas of chipping along the fragile colored borders, and no crease or wrinkles. It has been downgraded due to a small tear along the left edge. Entirely clean reverse. This is a tremendous newly discovered example of this incredibly rare card, which would be a worthy addition to any world-class Ty Cobb, sample, or prewar-card collection. Reserve $1,000.
