1887 N284 Buchner Gold Coin Old Hoss Radbourn

  • Sold For: $840
  • Year: 1887
  • Auction: 2015 Spring
  • Lot #: 41
  • Auction Category: Pre-1900 Baseball Cards (1830-1899)

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Very attractive mid-grade example of Hall of Famer Old Hoss Radbourn (hands above waist) from the popular N284 Buchner Gold Coin set. Buchners are unusual in that they feature generic illustrations of the ballplayers rather than the actual likeness of the identified player. We have often noted that the substantial mustache on the artwork of the player on this card gives the illustration on this particular card the feel of an actual likeness (Radbourn had a similar substantial mustache). Though this may be just a coincidence, we hope it is not! The offered card displays a flawless, crisp image, with bold colors, even wear to the corners, and centering to the top left. Light tobacco staining is visible along the right edge. The reverse is entirely clean and boldly printed. This is an extremely presentable Hall of Famer example from the Buchner set, one of the few full-color baseball-card sets of the nineteenth century, and one of the most artistically interesting, distinctive, and classic baseball-card sets of the 1880s.  Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
