1911 "Big Eater" Sacramento Solons PCL - Mahoney - Highest Graded!

  • Sold For: $1,680
  • Year: 1911
  • Auction: 2016 Spring
  • Lot #: 361
  • Auction Category: Prewar Baseball - 1910s and 1920s Cards

Graded EX 60 by SGC. Extremely rare sample card (2-1/8 x 4 inches) from this unusual Pacific Coast League issue. "Big Eaters" feature full-length poses of members of the Sacramento Solons. Beneath the identification of each player and his team is the endorsement "He Eats 'Big Eater'." It is believed that "Big Eater" was a brand of candy. This is a very attractive example, with a crisp image, light wear to the corners, and centering very slightly to the bottom. Only three "Big Eater" examples (of any subject) have ever graded EX 60 by SGC to date (with none higher)! This is the only Mahoney graded at this level! A superb sample card from one of the rarest of all PCL issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
