1914 E224 Texas Tommy (Type 2) Chief Meyers

  • Sold For: $1,920
  • Year: 1914
  • Auction: 2017 Spring
  • Lot #: 371
  • Auction Category: Prewar Baseball - E Candy Cards

Incredibly rare Texas Tommy Type 2 of Chief Meyers, of the "Giants." It is almost impossible to find even a sample card from this issue. An example from Texas Tommy Type 2 is missing from almost every advanced sample-card collection. During the past forty years, we have had literally only a handful of cards from this set. Only fifteen different Type 2 Texas Tommys are known. Type 1 cards have printing, including advertising, on their reverses. Type 2 cards are slightly smaller (1.875 x 3 inches), are printed on far superior stock, with a glossy photographic finish (as opposed to Type 1 cards which have lower-quality "flat" printing), and have blank backs. While the card has been graded FAIR 20 by SGC, this magnificent example has an EX-MT appearance from the front. Very close examination reveals a few light creases. On the blank reverse is evidence of pencil erasure. Aside from this flaw, the card is in solid Vg+ condition and has an even more impressive appearance. Bright, perfectly clean and crisp, with just a hint of corner wear. Texas Tommys were issued with candy bars of that name by a candy company named "Cardinet Candy Co." of Oakland, California. This is an extremely attractive sample card from this rare "E" card set, of a very well-known player, and featuring an absolutely stunning and flawless image. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
