1910 "Orange Borders" Ty Cobb

  • Sold For: $1,440
  • Year: 1910
  • Auction: 2018 fall
  • Lot #: 531
  • Auction Category: Prewar Baseball - 1910s to 1920s Cards

For many decades this rare set has been referred to by advanced collectors as "Orange Borders." In 1910 the "Geo. Davis Co., Inc." and the "P.R. Warren Co." of Massachusetts together issued this striking and extremely rare package-design set, with two cards featured on each box of "American Sports - Candy and Jewelry" (one on the front, and one on the back). It is rare to find even common-player sample cards from this issue, let alone Hall of Famer Ty Cobb, as featured here. Ty Cobb is by far the key card to the set. Graded POOR 10 by SGC, the obvious condition flaws include heavy creasing and back damage from album removal. This is a very presentable example of one of the most elusive of all Ty Cobb cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
