1920-1921 W514 #95 Sam Crawford - Rare "Mother's Bread" Backs (Both Variations)

  • Sold For: $600
  • Year: 1920
  • Auction: 2018 fall
  • Lot #: 682
  • Auction Category: Prewar Baseball - 1910s to 1920s Cards

Presented are both Sam Crawford variations, relating to the text on the reverse, from the W514 strip-card series, each featuring the extremely rare "Mother's Bread" advertising reverse. The W514 set is the largest and most widely collected of the various strip-card issues of the era. Cards from this set are occasionally found with advertising backs, and "Mother's Bread" is one of the scarcest. The advertising on the back of these cards was printed in two ways: vertical and horizontal on the reverse. Both cards are encapsulated as Authentic by PSA. 1) Horizontal printing on back. Bold colors, flawless registration, centered slightly to the left, and a clean reverse. The lower left corner is missing. 2) Vertical printing on back. The registration is slightly off and the card is miscut along the right edge. Clean reverse. This is an extremely rare pair of cards featuring Hall of Famer Sam Crawford with the desirable "Mother's Bread" advertisement from the W514 issue, one of the most important and comprehensive sets of the era. Total: 2 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
