1929 Leader Novelty Candy Co. Rogers Hornsby - 1 of 1 - Highest Graded!

  • Sold For: $780
  • Year: 1929
  • Auction: 2018 fall
  • Lot #: 750
  • Auction Category: Prewar Baseball - 1910s to 1920s Cards

Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. This is the ONLY example graded by PSA at any level of Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby from the extremely scarce 1929 Leader Novelty Candy Co. issue. Believed to be an insert in boxes of Leader Novelty Candy, these small cards, which measure approximately 1-3/4 x 2-5/8 inches, share images with the R316 Kashin Publications set. Hornsby is depicted in a sepia-toned batting pose on the offered card, which has a crisp image, even corner wear, and a clean blank reverse. The set is so rare that while only thirty-three different subjects have been verified to date, it is possible that the entire set may include as many as 101 subjects if the entire R316 checklist can also be found on Leader Novelty cards. This is an outstanding and extremely rare Hall of Fame sample card from this obscure 1920s issue and would be a worthy addition to any Rogers Hornsby, Hall of Fame, or type-card collection. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
