1960 Leaf Complete Set (144) Plus Wrapper and Three Variations Including #58b Hal Smith/Team Blackened Out

  • Sold For: $4,200
  • Year: 1960
  • Auction: 2018 spring
  • Lot #: 1514
  • Auction Category: Postwar Baseball - 1960s Cards

50% Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt (including a couple Mint or better), 40% Ex to Ex-Mt, and 10% Vg-Ex. Presented is a very attractive high-grade complete set of 1960 Leaf cards, including the three scarce variation cards (#25 Grant error and both #58 Smith back variations including "Team Blackened Out"). Leaf packaged these unusual glossy black-and-white cards with marbles in an attempt to navigate contract terms with players, which dictated that only Topps could issue cards of modern ballplayers with bubble gum. Two cards have been professionally graded by PSA and SGC. Keys: #1 Aparicio (Ex-Mt), 25a Grant (Error – white cap, Nr/Mt), 25b Grant (Corrected – dark cap, Ex-Mt+), 27 B. Robinson (Vg-Ex+), 37 Snider (Nr/Mt-Mt), 58b H. Smith (team blackened out on reverse variation, Vg-Ex+), 58c H. Smith (team missing on reverse variation, Vg-Ex+), 69 Wilhelm (Nr/Mt), 125 Anderson (Nr/Mt-Mt), 128 Cepeda (Nr/Mt), 141 Flood (Ex-Mt), 143 Dalrymple (SGC GEM 98), and 144 Bunning (PSA MINT 9). The set is accompanied by a wrapper with moderate creasing but which is still in overall Vg-Ex condition, and nine two-count packages of marbles (in various colors) that were originally inserted in the wax packs. One of the era's most unusual and interesting issues. Total: 157 items (complete set of 144 cards, three variations, one wrapper, and nine two-count packages of marbles). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
