1884 Union League Scorecard

Sold For: $3,162
Year: 1884
Auction: 2004 Spring
Lot #: 7
Auction: Pre-1900 Baseball Memorabilia
Official fold-over style scorecard from the one-year major league Union League commemorates a game between the Baltimore and St. Louis teams of the Union League, and features preprinted lineups inside. In addition to the preprinted lineups, which identify this as a Union League scorecard, the interior also clearly notes the game is at Baltimore's Union Park. St. Louis millionaire Henry Lucas, who also owned the St. Louis Club, founded the Union League. His St. Louis team was far and away the best team of the league, eventually ending the season with an incredible league-leading 94-19 record. In fact, many Union League teams did not play out the entire season. Twelve teams started out and only five finished the season, with teams playing no set number of games. Still, the Union League represents one of the few attempts to challenge the powers of Major League Base Ball, and though it did not survive beyond a single season, its place in history and the evolution of the business of the game will live forever. It is not surprising that virtually nothing exists from the Union League. In over 30 years we have seen only one other Union League program. Material from the Federal and the Players Leagues are rare. Material from the Union League is virtually nonexistent. The interior of the program is neatly scored in pencil. Overall in about Excellent condition. Reserve $700. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,162.50
