Graded MINT 9 by PSA. Presented is the finest example in the world of one of collecting's most classic cards, the T206 portrait of Walter Johnson. This card is from the legendary Harris Collection. The Harris Collection provenance has special significance to advanced collectors, as this set of T206 cards was universally recognized to be the finest ever assembled. Many of the best T206 examples in the entire collecting world originate from the Harris Collection. The Johnson portrait card was one of the highlights of the collection, and to this day is widely recognized as the "signature" card of the Harris Collection, used as one of the primary illustrations in all articles on the Harris set. The Harris Collection was originally auctioned in August 2000. At that time this card sold for a record price of $38,358. It has been consigned to this sale directly from the original purchaser. The T206 Walter Johnson portrait is one of the most famous of all vintage baseball cards. This card is widely recognized to be Walter Johnson's most attractive and classic card. In fact, the majestic portrait of Johnson on this card is considered by many to be the single most striking image of any player from any set to ever appear on a baseball card. This is a simply stunning card in all respects. It is the finest example in the world of one of card collecting's greatest classics. All four corners are perfect and razor-sharp. The colors are unbelievably bright, crisp, and absolutely flawless. The card is perfectly clean, both front and back, with snow-white borders. The registration is flawless. The centering on front is virtually perfect (47/53 left to right). The back of the card is centered slightly toward the bottom and left. To our eye, the centering on the reverse appears to be the only factor keeping this card from grading a perfect Gem Mint 10. This card would be a worthy centerpiece to even the most advanced world class vintage card collection. SMR value is $37,500. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000/$40,000. SOLD FOR $37,700.00
