1910 T210 Old Mill Series 8 Collection (14)

Sold For: $4,060
Year: 1910
Auction: 2005 Spring
Lot #: 9
Auction: Prewar Baseball - T Tobacco Cards
Collection of fourteen 1910 T210 Old Mill cards, all rare "Series 8" cards. The T210 set is comprised of eight different series, each representing a different minor league. The eighth series features players from the Southern Association. The 114 cards of the eighth series are the rarest cards of the T210 Old Mill set. In fact, it is precisely because Joe Jackson appears in the eighth series that he is so rare in the Old Mill set. The Joe Jackson card offered in the previous lot and the fourteen cards in this lot are from the very same collection of approximately 300 T210 cards, originating from an estate sale in the Baltimore area in the 1980s. These cards have been consigned directly from the original buyer at this sale, who purchased the entire collection. These were the only "Series 8" cards in the collection. While every card in this lot is much rarer than the T206 Wagner, we cannot help but note that one player in this group is named Wagner. This lot includes: Bauer (Birmingham), Carson (Chattanooga), Collins (Chattanooga), Elliot (Birmingham), Emery (Birmingham), Maxwell (New Orleans), McGilvray (Birmingham), McLaurin (Chattanooga), Miller (Chattanooga), Newton (Birmingham), Rhodes (Chattanooga), Schlitzer (Chattanooga), Schopp (Birmingham), and Wagner (Birmingham). These cards all have a Very Good to Excellent appearance, with the exception of two (Rhodes and Collins, which are Good to Very Good. As is often the case with these red-bordered cards, there is some wear to the red borders, mostly in the corners. Very close examination of the borders reveals a virtually undetectable, ever so slight waviness or slight sloping wave to the cut of the cards, which grading services might interpret as a possible trim; however, we have no question that these cards are not trimmed. Early cards (most notably Old Judges, for example) occasionally have unusual, imperfect cuts that are unrelated to trimming, and this is such a case. That is why the corner wear of these cards is completely inconsistent with being trimmed. It is also not a coincidence that the only cards from this collection of 300 T210 Old Mill cards sharing the characteristic of having this very subtle inferior cut are the "Series 8" cards. The fact that all share the same cutting characteristics confirms that these rare "Series 8" card examples were cut differently, whether very carefully by hand from sheets, or simply by an inferior cutting process. The cut on these cards is original to 1910, the cards were issued exactly in this manner, and the cards are definitely not trimmed. This is an exciting group for T210 collectors. Fourteen is a large group for these extreme tobacco card rarities from the T210 Old Mill set. Total 14 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,060.00
