1947 Ty Cobb Coca-Cola Advertising Display

Sold For: $1,762
Year: 1947
Auction: 2007 Spring
Lot #: 9
Auction: Featured
Classic cardboard Coca-Cola advertising store display sign, picturing the fabled "Georgia Peach," Ty Cobb. This is one in a series of promotional advertising displays, titled "All-Time Winners," issued by Coca-Cola in 1947. In addition to Cobb, displays from the series featuring a number of other famous American sports legends, including Gene Tunney and Red Grange, were also issued. Its stunning graphics and exceptional visual appeal notwithstanding, the offered piece is also highly prized by collectors due to Cobb's long association with the company. Cobb was an early investor in Coca-Cola (its headquarters was located in Cobb's home state of Georgia) and later became one of the company's largest shareholders, thereby earning him a seat on the board of directors. At the time of Cobb's death, in 1961, his net worth was estimated at over $10 million, with much of that money having accrued from his Coca-Cola investments. Cobb first appeared in a Coca-Cola advertisement in 1907 and he continued as an active spokesperson for the remainder of his life. This is one of the few high-quality baseball Coca-Cola advertising displays ever produced. It is also one of the most striking Ty Cobb advertising displays produced by any company from any era. The display (13 x 15) is complete with its original attached string on the reverse for hanging. We have seen a few of these rare Coca-Cola Ty Cobb displays over the past thirty years; of these, this is by far the finest example. Aside from some extremely minor corner wear, the piece is in exceptional Near Mint condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
