1952 Topps PSA-Graded Complete Set (407)

Sold For: $105,750
Year: 1952
Auction: 2009 Spring
Lot #: 5
Auction: Postwar Baseball - 1950s Cards
Presented is one of the finest complete sets of 1952 Topps cards ever assembled. This is an astounding set. All 407 cards have been encapsulated and graded by PSA (with the exception of sixteen SGC and five GAI, all extremely strong and impressive cards that we believe, to a card, would each easily cross to PSA if desired). Included are 42 NM-MT 8, 65 NM 7, 297 EX-MT 6, and just three cards grade lower (two Ex+, one Ex). This ultra high-grade set has been assembled one card at a time, over a period of many years, by an extremely dedicated collector with an uncompromising commitment to condition and eye-appeal, actively seeking to upgrade every card of this set during the entire span of his collecting. This is a world-class investment-grade set of the most important issue in the entire world of postwar-card collecting. A complete set of 1952 Topps is noteworthy in any condition, especially because of the rare high-number series cards (#311-407). Thirty of the ninety-seven rare high-number cards grade Near Mint or better (ten NM-MT 8, twenty NM 7, sixty-seven EX-MT 6 including #311 Mantle).

PSA grading composite: Forty-two cards are graded NM-MT 8: #37 Snider, 82, 83, 85, 86, 87, 93, 95, 103, 117, 118, 125, 126, 127, 142, 149, 160, 197, 198, 204, 208, 217, 218, 224, 228, 230, 234, 238, 245, 247, 265, 293, 313 Thomson, 314 Campanella (GAI NM-MT+ 8.5), 334 High #, 342 Labine RC, 351 Dark, 352 High #, 354 High #, 365 Lavagetto, 385 High #, and 392 Wilhelm RC (GAI NM-MT 8, particularly strong example).

This is an extraordinary offering of one of the highest-grade complete sets of one of baseball-card collecting's premier issues. This is a set which comes with a built-in "insurance policy." It can always be broken up, and depending on what it sells for, a buyer might actually be rewarded for doing so. Our consignor has elected to offer this collection in complete set form rather than breaking the set up into a number of more affordable units to maximize value. So much time, effort, and work has gone into its assembly, that it was the consignor's desire to sell the set intact. The equivalent SMR value of the set is $105,235. The SMR, however, cannot begin to quantify the time and effort that is required to put together a set of this extraordinary quality. We realize that potentially few collectors can seriously consider buying a complete set of this caliber, but for those who can consider such a commitment, this set represents a remarkable and unique opportunity. The set includes a stunning EX-MT 6 example of the #311 Mickey Mantle rookie card, which alone has long been recognized as one of card collecting's most famous and valuable cards. Because so much time and effort has been invested in comparing cards in the assembly of this set, many cards are noticeably strong for the grades. The SGC 7.5 NM+ #261 Willie Mays, for example, to our eye looks like a very strong NR-MT to MT example. The same can be said for so many other cards in this particular set. This is not an accident. The consignor's goal was to put together an extremely high-grade set representing a particularly strong value. He would rather pay a premium for a strong PSA 6 that looks like a PSA 7 than get a good deal on a weak PSA 7. His approach and diligence makes this set an all the more extraordinary opportunity. The 1952 Topps set has always been one of card collecting's most revered sets. It shares this honor with only a handful of classic baseball-card issues such as T206, Cracker Jack, and 1933 Goudey. It is the premier postwar baseball-card set. This is one of the finest sets ever assembled of the classic 1952 Topps issue. Total 407 cards. Reserve $25,000. Estimate $50,000+. SOLD FOR $105,750
